One of our latest bespoke projects is a perfect example of everything slate can offer. This material was used for the ‘Graphite Bar’ at the Leathes Head Hotel at Keswick, and the end result is a stunning slate bar top with intricate engravings.
Slate works extremely well in busy environments, be it in your home or in a commercial setting, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that this stone is also perfect to serve as a bar top at the Leathes Head Hotel. This project was designed and managed by designers Pippa Murray and Rhianon Morgan-Hatch, and the engraving performed is the exact ordnance survey contours of the surrounding Lake District mountains, from where the slate was formed over 400 million years ago.
These beautiful, creative engravings are machined into each piece of slate by local craftsmen at Gordon Greaves Stone in Troutbeck Bridge, turning this bar top into a truly original piece – one which is a wonderful blend of art and function. Hotel guests from around the world are able to enjoy all the benefits of a slate surface while taking in its design and being a conversation starter for any lover of this spectacularly scenic area.
The slate used for this eye-catching bar top is a Lakeland Brathay Blue Black slate, quarried from the heart of the Lake District. Your imagination is the limit when it comes to using natural slate, as this stone is highly flexible and can be used in many different ways and designs. By adding a honed finish, the inherent threaded natural markings in the stone are highlighted.
Combined with the gorgeous and intricate etchings on the surface of the stone, the result is a modern, stylish bar-top that greatly complements its natural oak surrounding fixtures and matches the overall design of the space beautifully.
